Expert Tree Pruning Services
Tree pruning is an important maintenance practice and every tree should be treated on a regular basis. Unfortunately, too many homeowners ignore the importance of pruning and allow their trees to become overgrown and unhealthy.
At Arbor Solutions, we prioritize the health of your trees by using spikeless pruning techniques. This method minimizes damage to the tree's bark and reduces the risk of disease and infection. Some of the pruning services we offer include:
Hazard Reduction Pruning
We’ll prune out any flawed or compromised growth on your trees that could potentially break off from the weather and cause damage.
Corrective Pruning
We’ll prune your young trees to help improve their long-term form and encourage healthy development.
Deadwood Pruning
Deadwood is unappealing, prone to breaking, and stresses a tree. Our team can remove it to improve safety and tree health.
Defensible Space Pruning
Defensible space pruning will remove low-hanging branches from your tree to protect your property from wildfires.

The Importance of Coniferous Tree Pruning
We are blessed with beautiful coniferous trees in the greater Truckee-Tahoe region, but far too many homeowners neglect to have them pruned. Tree pruning is incredibly beneficial to your trees. Some of the benefits of pruning include:
Reduced Fuel Ladders: Fuel ladders are the path a fire takes to go from the ground up into the canopy. The low-hanging branches of unpruned coniferous trees can allow the fire to get into a tree canopy and spread to surrounding trees. Removing low branches is a critical part of defensible space mitigation.
Reduced Transmission of Diseases: Pruning can remove infected material from your tree and reduce the risk of future diseases establishing themselves in your coniferous trees.
Reduced Tree Stress: While it may seem counterintuitive, pruning can actually reduce tree stress in the long run. Deadwood and infected material stress a tree, and removing these useless branches allows the tree to focus its energy on healthy growth.

Pruning Permits in the Greater Truckee-Tahoe Region
Homeowners who live under the jurisdiction of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will need to apply for a permit for some forms of tree pruning. The agency requires homeowners to apply for a permit to remove branches from the upper ⅔ of a tree. There are exceptions to this requirement, such as when a branch:

Spikeless Pruning: The Safer Way to Prune Trees
Far too often, we see other companies using tree climbing spikes while pruning, a practice the Tree Care Industry Association discourages due to the risk it poses to your tree. Tree climbing spikes have their use during tree removal, but never while pruning.
Using climbing spikes will put holes in a tree trunk, causing several problems, such as:
At Arbor Solutions, we never use climbing spikes while pruning trees. The modern climbing equipment and techniques that our team uses have rendered spikes obsolete when pruning trees.

Cabling and Bracing in Conjunction with Pruning
Cabling and bracing can help stabilize trees and strengthen weak sections, and we may suggest it to you in conjunction with pruning. We perform non-invasive cabling using COBRA cables. We won’t drill into your tree or use steel, as we’ve found the softwoods in our area do not respond well. Drilling will also create areas of decay on your tree. The goal of our cabling is to correct included bark and reduce the risk of failure.

FAQs
Spikeless pruning is the process of avoiding the use of climbing spikes when pruning a tree, as they damage your tree and can potentially kill it if the damage is too severe.
When done correctly using ANSI A300 standards, pruning does not cause much stress or harm to your trees. Improper pruning will stress a tree.
The best frequency for pruning will largely depend on a tree’s species, age, and condition. Talk to an arborist about setting up a schedule. Generally, you will want to prune a tree every 3-5 years.
While homeowners may be able to handle pruning small trees if they know the proper techniques, pruning large trees is something that is always best left to professionals.
